0 - Before You Begin: Guitar Basics
How To Tune A Guitar For Beginners
Use your thumb instead of a pick! Strum a string with your thumb, and then rest your finger on the string below.
How To Hold Your Guitar
- Step 1 - Rest the guitar on your right leg.
- Step 2 - Use your right arm to stabilize the guitar.

Extra Tip! You don’t want the weight of your whole arm on your
shoulder while you’re playing. Get comfortable and make sure your strumming
arm feels relaxed. Strumming is a bit tricky, and these small details will
help you out in the future. ;)
- Step 3 - Make sure your fretting hand isn’t holding up the guitar.
- Step 4 - Don’t lean the guitar back towards you. Don’t look over the guitar. Keep good posture
Positive Finger Placement
When pressing a string, get your finger as close to the fret as possible without actually touching it. You won’t have to press down too hard to produce a good sound.
Want to try it out? Here’s a simple test for you!
- Choose any string to play. Place your first finger as close to the fret as possible, and pick that string. How much pressure do you need to get a good-sounding note? You should not have to press very hard at all if your finger is right next to the fret!
- Now, move your finger to the back of the fret. Place it nearest the nut, away from your body but within the fret. Do you see how much pressure it requires to get that same note to sound good? Don’t let the finger sneak over the fret, though, or you’ll mute the sound.

How To Hold A Guitar Pick
I recommend the Dunlop Nylon .38 as the best thin pick for beginners
I recommend that you also buy a thicker pick - we’ll need them when learning to play riffs - and that will happen soon! The Dunlop Tortex Orange is my to-go
Step 1 - Place the pick on finger 1. Its point should follow the direction of
your finger - the pick should point out the top of it.
Step 2 - Place your thumb on top so that the pick is coming out of the side of
your thumb.
How To Strum Without A Pick
Strumming with your thumb gives you a rounder sound, and strumming with a pick gives you a brighter sound.
Work on getting your thumb’s angle right! You don’t want your thumb to get caught on the thinnest string on the up strums. You can flat your hand out slightly, so you don’t get too much of your nail on the up strums.
But how exactly do you get that brighter sound that you get with a pick without using one? Put your thumb and first finger together as if you’re holding a pick between them! It’s simple - when you strum this way, your nail hits both the up and down strums, mimicking the sound of the pick.

When to move on from Module 1?
You’ve memorized the A and the D chords.
You can change between A and D at least 30 times a minute. If this seems impossible and you can’t achieve it after a few weeks, you can move. Later on our journey, you’ll learn some other tricks to switch faster between chords. I don’t want you to get bored! :)

E Chord Anchors & Tricks
Changing between E and A
- While leaving your 1st finger in place, lift your 2nd and 3rd fingers.
- Slide the 1st finger forward one fret, from the 1st fret to the 2nd.
- Place your 2nd and 3rd fingers down in the correct positions to form your A chord.
Changing between E and D
- While leaving your 1st finger in place, lift your 2nd and 3rd fingers.
- Slide the 1st finger forward one fret, from the 1st fret to the 2nd.
- Place your 2nd and 3rd fingers down in the correct positions to form your D chord.
Tapping Your Foot
- Tap your foot on the opposite side you play your guitar
- You must stay aware of your guitar posture too!
- To avoid getting leg cramps, I recommend using your heel to tap.
- We tap once on every beat. If a song has four beats per bar, tap your foot four times per bar. Keep your foot consistent and steady!
Strumming Mechanics
The strum comes from the movement of your forearm.
- Imagine a straight line from your elbow to your thumb.
- Your wrist shouldn’t be doing much work.
- To practice, motion up and down the strings without moving your wrist.
